Kumamoto: A Comfortable Town

Kumamoto is a beautiful city with mountains to the east and the sea to the west. It has been said that Kumamoto city is one of the most international cities in Japan.
Since ancient times, Kumamoto has developed as a cultural city in the center of the island of Kyushu. Today, there are seven Universities in the city, the most prestigious of which is Kumamoto University. The cost of living is lower than in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka, and thus the city provides a comfortable living environment that creates an excellent academic atmosphere.

Kumamoto is located in the center of Kyushu, which is blessed with both urban centers and an abundance of nature, such as the world-famous Mt. Aso. YMCA can arrange student housing.

Cost of Living

Beyond housing and school fees, living expenses will come to approximately ¥30,000-¥50,000 per month in Kumamoto. Kumamoto is a comfortable city to live in - especially for international students – due to lower accommodation costs and prices compared to big cities, such as Tokyo.

Health and Security

All students are required to enroll in the Japanese National Health and Accident Insurance system upon admission to YMCA. This insurance covers 70% of medical treatment costs in cases of illness or injury.

Transportation

Kumamoto does not take transportation expenses very much, especially in case you live in the dormitory; it is located in between school and downtown and takes only 10-15 minutes to school/downtown by bicycle. The school can be easily accessed by bicycle or by Kumamoto’s inexpensive bus system from student housing.
