Entry requirements

  1. Applicants who completed twelve (12) years of formal schooling or the equivalent in their own countries or elsewhere.
  2. Applicants who wish to go on to university, graduate school or special training school in Japan.
  3. It is essential for applicants to have someone who is responsible for paying the tuition and cost of living during your course of study in Japan, be it themselves or someone else. Whoever pays must supply a document of proof of assets, such as a bankbook.
  4. Applicants must have taken more than 150 hours Japanese classes or have Japanese proficiency equivalent to grade four of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

Admission

The Kumamoto YMCA College, Japanese Department requires the following documents in order to admit an applicant.

A) Application form (to be completed by the applicant)

If you have no relevant information for a particular section, please write ‘none’.
Please include details about your family or the people you live with in the section entitled ‘Family’.

B) Personal history

If you have no relevant information for a particular section, please write ‘none’.


  1. Please write the name and location of all schools and companies on your application form.
  2. Please write down dates of entry and graduation from all schools, as well as the duration of your period of study. Also, write down the start and finish dates for any jobs you have held.
  3. Please write the year and month of entrance and graduation in the section marked ‘No.5 Educational Background’ and ‘No.6 Japanese Language Experience’. Please write only the year and month and leave the date blank.
  4. Please circle each applicable item and fill in the section marked ‘No.10 Specific Plans after Finishing School’.

C) Essay (to be written by the applicant)

Please write a short essay outlining your reasons for wanting to study at Kumamoto YMCA College Japanese Language Department. Please write the essay in Japanese, if possible. If you are unable to do this, please attach a Japanese translation to your essay. 
Note to applicants: Please make sure that you give concrete and specific reasons as to why you
want to study at Kumamoto YMCA College. Taking into account your educational background and professional experience, write specifically about your reasons for applying and your goals.

D) Photographs

Please include seven photographs of yourself. The photographs should have been taken within the last three months with no background and no hats and should measure 3.5cm by 4.5cm.


Certificates

All certificates submitted must be originals, not certified copies.
Please attach a Japanese translation to each certificate if it is not written in Japanese. Translator’s name, address and telephone and signature must be written at the bottom of each translation. If there is no Japanese translator, please ask YMCA.

A) Academic certificates

  1. An original diploma from the final educational institutional from which you graduated (high school, college or university).
  2. An original academic transcript from the same institution (high school, college or university).
  3. In the case of those applicants applying while they are still in school, the following documents can be submitted instead.
    • Certificate of Enrolment
    • Transcript of School Records

B) Certificates relating to Japanese study

  1. If you have passed the Japanese Proficiency Test at any level, please include the certificate and the original score report. If you have taken and failed the Japanese Proficiency Test at any level,
    please include the original score report.
  2. If you have studied Japanese at high school or university, please include a transcript of the
    course(s).
  3. If you have studied Japanese at a language school, please include a certificate of completion of study.

C) Proof of past employment (if applicable)


Proof of your ability to support yourself during your course of study

Required documents.

  1. Certificate of your current account balance
  2. In the case of living expenses and school fees being borne by another person (e.g. father, mother, husband, wife etc.)
    • Financial plan (Designated Form)
    • Certificate of your current account balance, proof of income and proof of employment.
    • A copy of a census register or similar document which shows the relationship between yourself and the person responsible for maintaining you during your course of study.

Copy of Passport

Please make a copy of all the pages of your passport, except for unstamped, blank pages.

Others

Any documents required by the YMCA. 
N.B.: The Certificate of Eligibility is required to obtain a student visa. Under the rules of the Immigration Bureau of Japan, the YMCA submits the documents to the Bureau to apply for the Certificate of Eligibility on behalf of applicants. Therefore, please include 20,000 yen as the application fee along with the documents listed above.
